It is impossible to overcome if we refuse to confess and repent, and I think many of us refuse more often than we would be comfortable admitting. Unfortunately, we've become rather adept at it, skillfully refusing in a subtle, socially acceptable, and seemingly justifiable way. What we must remember is that safety is not found in numbers when it comes to the issues of the heart, it is only found in Christ. Overcoming must start with a change of mind, and a change of mind will not happen until we begin to give in to that lingering suspicion that our view of reality may not be fully lining up with what the Lord says.
Most of us do not long for change in areas where we are comfortable, but walking into these kinds of change is not as scary as it sounds... unless we only know God only as Judge and not as Father. In reality, He is both, but having either view of Him without the other can often be a stronghold in our hearts - the very foundation of the things that are keeping us from overcoming. Discovering more of His character will inevitably unearth the many flaws in our own, and it can be a painful and costly process, but can we really put a price on drawing closer to the Lord? When done rightly, the many difficulties involved in the process will be overshadowed by the comfort of understanding His incredible love and faithfulness. There is peace in this kind of death - dying to self.
